I'm Kyle Parido and my major is secondary history education. I was born in Indianapolis and moved to Cincinnati when I was three. I played four years of baseball at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio. Also while at West I was in the Teacher Academy program which was a two year class in which we were taught basic principals of being an educator and gained over 100 hours of in class observation. With our experience in the classroom both as a student and an instructor we created praxis portfolios to present in F.E.A. competitions. I currently work at Kids First Sports Center where I am a camp counselor in the summer. I've had great teachers and role models who've inspired me to make a difference in students lives.

Issues in Ed Tech:
Engage -
  • Does technology make a difference in the learning life process or could you teach just as well without it?
Yes, technology can positively or negatively effect the learning process. Positively when technology like computers and the internet make research faster and centralized. Negatively when technology is used for entertainment instead of assisting in the classroom.
  • Are students today fundamentally different than students in the past?
Yes students are fundamentally different today than in the past because they grew up using computers which effects every day life.

Evaluate -
  • Does technology make a difference in the learning process or could you teach just as well without it?
I support my original statement because in the Clark reading it was proven that people with different mediums learned content better. Technology can be a very useful tool to assist learning in the classroom. Finding exactly the most effective way is the real challenge.
  • Are students today fundamentally different than students in the past?
I support my original statement because in Digital Natives Digital Immigrants reading they said the way we develop and grow effects the way we learn and process information. I totally agree with this because we start to gain our cognitive structure at a very young age and now kids are learning through different tools.

Objectivist vs. Constructivist:
Constructivist
This is a theory about how people learn. Its main focus is using past experiences to reflect on and draw conclusions. Using our reflections we shape what we learn and what we know. Implementing this in the classroom focuses on how each activity is applicable to real life situations. The more you experience and reflect, the greater your understanding of the world will be.
Objectivist
This is strict style of learning and gaining knowledge. It is the practice of drilling information until it is memorized. This is less effective because it does not connect with past experiences and build on what you already know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxufdpcfpJY
This video is a great example of constructivist because these students are designing a high school. They have to design blue prints, calculate cost, and work together as teams to solve problems. They have to use what they learned in class to solve real world problems. My math teacher in elementary school did a project that was very similar. We picked our favorite sport and have to design the plans to create a new stadium. This was one of the most fun projects I have ever done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-S54bbX6eA
This is a very good example of an objectivist style of teaching. He is just presenting the information in a way that is not tangible. The students are not engaged and the teacher is simple talking. I had a teacher like this in high school. He would give notes, lecture, then give the test. This style of learning is not beneficial or fun.

TEARS:

Solutions -
  • Get parents and the community involved for extra help and resources.
  • Send a few representatives from the school to learn new technology and train the rest.
  • Seek additional resource from school board.
  • Work out deals with vendors to get discounted prices.

Game Stations -
1. Civilization
2. This is a combination of virtual environments and role-playing. Civilization is a fake world and you have to choose a character to be, which covers both styles.
3. Standards -
MWH.912.1a Describe the cause or result of a historical event and a possible alternate course of action.
MWH.912.1c Identify a historical event occurring before or after another given event.
MWH.912.2c Ask questions to learn about an event that has happened in the past.

Website Evaluation -
I evaluated the RYTC hospital web page. At first glance it looks like a legitimate website, but once I started to look more into it I realized it was just a funny joke. The thing that made it blatantly obvious was a video that was talking about how RYTC was birthing a baby from a male. After laughing for a minute I looked at some of the articles that were posted and found out there is a pill that lets you only sleep for 12 minutes a night! This is a very good example of not judging a book by its cover because even though the look of the website fooled me into thinking it was real, the actual information was not.

ISTE Standards:

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers
B. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
This class has really opened my eyes to all the technology can be integrated into the classroom. No just the way teachers can use technology but also getting students involved in effect ways. A good example of this first standard is a lesson I posted in Diggo. This lesson is called Axis Powers and is an interactive way to see the starting events of WWII. These were real world issues that students could work through. In this lesson I would challenge students to put themselves in the shoes of leaders in this time period. I would ask them, what would you do to prevent these events? What are the goals of the opposition? What would your goals be as leaders of these countries? This interactive map helps students get an idea how it really was back in the 1940's.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.

I have found this class to be extremely helpful in showing ways to integrate technology in the classroom. Also it has showed useful digital tools for teachers. One of the ways I have designed an authentic learning experience is by creating a custom rubric on rubistar. We used a lesson that we had previously posted to design a rubric. Rubistar was a great experience because it was totally customizable. You could adjust how many columns and rows. Decided how many points each section would be worth. Also put in custom explanations for each point level. When you use rubrics it really helps promote students confidence in what they are learning and what their ultimate goal needs to be. This particular rubric definitely promotes creativity because in the lesson they have to give a presentation which gives them the opportunity to do so. My Rubric

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.

I feel one of the biggest jobs of an educator is to not only present information but to really help a student understand and use those ideas in life. Education is constantly changing and the more you can shift your methods toward how younger generations are learning and gaining information the more effective you will be. A good example of collaborating and using digital tools is our classes use of edmodo, which is a Facebook like website that does not need an email address. I am aware that social network sites like Facebook aren't necessary a good tool for educating, but they way this is set up it is very safe and effective. This site can be very useful for teachers and students because you can post any kind of resource on the news feed, whether it be a video, article or website. Then teachers can lead discussions on those materials. I would use this is my classroom as follow up discussion on a unit we just learned. I think anyone can learn material and spit it back out, but if you challenge students to discuss what they have learned and apply it that concept will stay with them for much longer.

4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

The biggest obstacle in using technology or the internet is keeping students focused on the assignment and safe from the dangers that come along with it. In our activity Internet Safety, we were required to read the acceptable use policy for a school district, both student and teacher. These rules outline the proper way for teachers and students to use computers and the internet. We were then split up into five groups and every group was given a situation that broke the rules or was some kind of gray area. We then had to use the acceptable use policy documents to write a letter either apologizing and explaining what we should have done different, or explaining that the use of the computer was necessary for instruction. This was an awesome lesson because it gave us insight on how we are and are not able to use computers in a school setting as an educator. Also putting ourselves in the shoes of someone who has broken the rule in some way helps us think about situations that can occur in the future and what we can do to prevent them.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
b. exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others.

The concepts that we are learning in this class are ones we need to bring into our daily life, not just in the classroom. The only way to become confident in using technology in the classroom is to practice using it. In this class we had a day where we just experimented with different kinds of technology. Multimedia Stations was a great activity because it gave us the opportunity to use ipads, computers, smart boards and other technology in an instructional way. After we were done going through each station we had to pick two that we liked the best and write a reflection on them. When you can integrate devices that students use at home in your lessons, it makes it easier for students to relate to the lesson. As a future educator I plan to use many different kinds of technology and devices to aid to my lessons.

Final Reflection:

When I first started this course I was not sure what to expect. I figured that it would necessarily be very hard because I grew up in a generation and a family that had a computer in the house at all times. I wasn't too far off with the actually navigating and understanding computers, but when it came to applying resources and online activities to the classroom we all had a lot of work to do. Every week presented a new challenge to create, integrate, and learn digital methods for educators to use in the classroom. I have to say my favorite part of this course was all the group work and hands on activities that we did. For example, our Devices- Photo Essay project we had to go around campus as a group to show different ideas. Ours was about showing how the United States has been effected by multiculturalism. Also another activity that was awesome was our game stations activity. The class period was dedicated to showing us how to effectively use games in the classroom and made us experiment with many different kinds. This class was definitely an eye opening experience and has encouraged me to explore new ways to integrate technology. I think as education progress's we will see a shift to more electronic and media based structure, along with a more individualized method of instruction. This class has taught me a lot and I cant wait to use what I have learned in my own classroom.
